BDO Canada reaffirms commitment to truth and reconciliation

Toronto, Canada—On National Indigenous Peoples Day, BDO Canada reaffirms its dedication to the journey of truth and reconciliation with Indigenous communities across Canada. The firm acknowledges the deep-rooted traumas faced by Indigenous Peoples and pledges to move forward with genuine purpose, allyship, and respect.

Aligning its reconciliation efforts with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 calls to action, BDO has embarked on key initiatives directed by its Indigenous Steering Committee.

Efforts include providing a firm-wide day for commemoration on Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, giving BDO people across Canada the space to reflect and participate in educational events.

BDO also hosts ongoing educational initiatives such as podcast sharing circles, an Indigenous book club, and firm-wide webcasts featuring Indigenous voices. The firm has engaged Design de Plume, an Indigenous and women-owned creative agency, to craft diverse and culturally responsive visuals that reflect BDO values and amplify the rich heritage of Indigenous communities. BDO also supports and celebrates Indigenous accomplishments and is a proud sponsor of the 2024 Indspire Awards.

"By honouring the wisdom, resiliency, and courage of those who came before us, we embrace our responsibility to forge a future rooted in understanding and healing. Our commitment to reconciliation is a journey that requires humility, empathy, and sincerity. We’re taking actionable steps forward, guided by meaningful dialogue and input from our firm’s Indigenous Pillar Leads and external advisors."
Bruno Suppa, CEO, and Mike Abbott, Managing Partner, Markets & Industry, and Indigenous Pillar Executive Leadership Team Sponsor, BDO Canada

The firm’s leadership is committed to continuous learning, building a foundational cultural awareness of the Indigenous Peoples, and reflecting on how the firm can be a better ally. To advance these efforts, BDO has taken steps to engage a pan-Canadian Indigenous advisory circle to formalize its Reconciliation Action Plan.
