BDO Canada is currently working towards publishing their first Accessibility Action Plan Progress Report by November 20th, 2024, in accordance with the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) and provincial accessibility legislation. BDO Canada published their first Accessibility Action Plan in November 2023, and you can read that by visiting our Accessibility Plan. Today, BDO is looking to receive feedback on the accessibility of our current services and how we can better support client accessibility needs.

Definitions

Accessibility
Accessibility refers to how services, technology, locations, devices, environments, and products are designed to accommodate persons with disabilities. Accessibility means giving people of all abilities equal opportunities to take part in life activities. The term implies conscious planning, design, and/or effort to make sure something is barrier-free to persons with disabilities. Accessibility also benefits the general population by making everything more usable and practical for all people.
Barrier
Anything – including anything physical, architectural, technological, or attitudinal, anything that is based on information or communications or anything that is the result of a policy or a practice – that hinders the full and equal participation in society of persons with an impairment, including physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication or sensory impairment or a functional limitation.
Disability
BDO uses the definition of disability found in the Accessible Canada Act, which is: “any impairment, including a physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication, or sensory impairment — or a functional limitation — whether permanent, temporary, or episodic in nature, or evident or not, that, in interaction with a barrier, hinders a person’s full and equal participation in society.
Episodic Disabilities
An episodic disability is a disability for which a person can experience periods of fluctuating good health and ill health. These periods can occur at irregular intervals and often unpredictably.
Mental Health
Mental health is the state of your psychological and emotional well-being. It is a necessary resource for living a healthy life and a main factor in overall health. Mental health does not mean the same thing as mental illness. However, poor mental health can lead to both mental and physical illness.
